Celebrating The Legacy of Black Culture

On February 29th, 2024, the City of New Rochelle and the African American Advisory Committee (AAAC) joined forces to host the inaugural “Celebrating The Legacy of Black Culture” event. The entrance to City Council chambers was adorned with portraits of local icons such as Rev. Dr. Allen Paul Weaver, Jr. and Pearl C. Quarles, while the rotunda boasted striking balloon sculptures in red, black and green. Attendees were treated to culinary delights from nearby Black-owned eateries.

The program commenced with opening remarks from Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert and City Manager Kathleen Gill, followed by introductions from AAAC Chair Angela Farrish and Co-Chair Elder Mark McLean. Performances by talented individuals, including youth poet laureate Harmony Hopwood, saxophonist Edison Joel Alvarez, and the Gospel group Purpose captivated the audience. A special tribute was paid to the family of the late Rev. Dr. Allen Paul Weaver, Jr.
