New RoAR News is the new voice for New Rochelle, a space for sharing local news, information, and opinions with an anti-racist viewpoint. 

New RoAR News was created in February 2023 by New Rochelle Against Racism (New RoAR), a multiracial, multigenerational group that has been meeting weekly since 2015. 

Since then, New RoAR has engaged in on many fronts in New Rochelle, including education, housing, employment, environmental justice, downtown development, policing and health—always with an eye towards elevating the interests of the Black community, other communities of color and the marginalized, by opposing structural and institutional racism wherever it appears.

New Rochelle’s government, led by a passive City Council and a City Manager with almost unlimited power, has consistently shown itself to be unresponsive to the needs of these communities.  And New Rochelle has fallen victim to the national decline in local media. 

New RoAR News will attempt to fill the local media gap with a platform for honest discussion about the problems facing New Rochelle, including the persistent racial disparities in all aspects of life that other media prefer to sweep under the rug.  We will identify structural and institutional racism wherever we see it and propose action to narrow racial disparities.

We are new at this.  We are all unpaid volunteers who want to see New Rochelle live up to its high ideals by building a community that offers a high quality of life and equal opportunity for all its residents.  We will learn as we go.
