School and Library Budgets Approved by Voters

New Rochelle voters approved new school and library budgets and a school bond issue and elected new members of the Board of Education and the Library board in local voting in New Rochelle on Tuesday, May 16.

Despite a low turnout, with only about 2600 of New Rochelle’s 40,000 registered voters casting ballots, the results were decisive, with the budgets and bond issue all passing by about a 2/3 majority.

Makeda Lewis was elected to a full 5-year term on the Board of Education.  She will fill the seat of Julia Muggia Ochs, whose term concludes on July 1.

Don Vega was elected to fill the BOE seat of Adam Cooper, who resigned after less than a year in office.  Vega will take office immediately and complete the remaining 4 years of Cooper’s term.

And Fela Cortes and Carmen Tatiana Infante were elected to five-year terms on the Board of the New Rochelle Public Library.
