Applications Open for Youth Justice Advisory Committee
In October 2020, Judge Jared Rice launched the Opportunity Youth Part (OYP) initiative in New Rochelle City Court. This innovative initiative links emerging adults facing misdemeanor or felony charges, ages 16 to 24, to local service providers who offer workforce development training and access to employment, academic assistance, behavioral health services, and mentors from the community.
In June 2022, the Youth Justice Equity Team (YJET) of New Rochelle was created, with stakeholders from local agencies engaged in juvenile justice and youth services working together to reduce youth involvement in the criminal and family legal systems through education, training, and community support.
Building on these important and groundbreaking initiatives, the City Council voted on February 18 to establish the Youth Justice Advisory Committee (YJAC), a permanent committee dedicated to advocating for youth justice initiatives in New Rochelle. With both youth and adult stakeholders, YJAC will focus on advancing the City’s role in providing support, resources, and policy solutions that impact youth justice.

Applications are now being accepted for members of YJAC.
The committee’s 15 members will be appointed by the City Manager, and will include 8 voting young adult members, at least 5 of whom have been impacted by the criminal justice system; 3 voting adult community members; and 4 non-voting members (one each from the City Council, the Board of Education, the city staff, and the staff of the City School District of New Rochelle).
YJAC members will serve as unpaid volunteers three-year terms. The committee will meet monthly and will present to the City Council a minimum of twice per year, with both assessments and proposed solutions.
Community members who desire to further the YJAC goals are encouraged to apply.
To apply, submit a resume and cover letter through the City website or in person to the Office of the City Clerk at City Hall, 515 North Avenue, during business hours (Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm). Applications must include name, address, contact information, qualifications and interest in serving.
Applications must be received by May 9 at 4:30 pm.
